The teachings we learned on the land came in the form of time spent with Kokum and Mushom and many years of experience spent living off the land; hunting, fishing, trapping, and foraging.”

Mushom’s Story

Pemmican is a mixture of tallow, dried meat and dried berries used as a nutritious food. Historically, it was an important part of indigenous cuisine in parts of North America, and is still prepared today. The word comes from the Nēhîyaw|Cree word, ‘pimîhkân’, which itself is derived from the word ‘pîmî’, meaning fat or grease.

Though we love the connection to our culture and language, the namesake is tied to our beloved, late nimôsôm(or mushom) Ovide Desjarlais. He named the lodge and provided many stories of the land and history of the area. His stories stay with us forever and the name keeps his memory alive.
